SLP Productivity (%) = (Total Billable Minutes ÷ Total Paid Minutes) × 100

An SLP with 360 billable minutes on an 8-hour shift (480 min) hits 75%.

To find your clock-out time instead: Total Minutes Needed = Billable Minutes ÷ (Target % ÷ 100).

SLP benchmarks: SNF 85–92% · Outpatient 75–85% · School 75–85% · Hospital 75–85%.

2026 SLP Productivity Benchmarks by Setting

Based on ASHA health care surveys and industry standards, speech-language pathologists typically have lower productivity requirements than physical or occupational therapists due to the high volume of evaluations, complex documentation, and specialized testing required.

Benchmarks sourced from ASHA professional guidelines and CMS data.
Setting Target Range Notes
SNF 85–92% Highest targets, though slightly below PT/OT (typically 90-95%).
Outpatient 75–85% Accounts for higher cancellation rates and administrative tasks.
School-based 75–85% Heavy IEP documentation and meeting times affect billable hours.
Hospital / Acute 75–85% High variance due to medical complexities and coordination of care.
CF-SLP Varies (Reduced) Often 10-15% lower during early segments to allow for mentoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good SLP productivity %?

Productivity targets for SLPs depend heavily on the setting. In Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs), a good productivity target is typically 85-92%. In outpatient clinics and school-based settings, the standard drops to around 75-85% due to higher cancellation rates and administrative overhead.

How is SLP productivity calculated?

SLP Productivity is calculated by dividing your total billable (or productive) minutes by your total clocked-in minutes, then multiplying by 100. Unpaid lunch breaks should be excluded from the total clocked-in minutes before calculating. The formula is: (Billable Minutes ÷ Paid Minutes) × 100.

What does the 8-minute rule mean for SLPs?

The CMS 8-minute rule applies to timed CPT codes (e.g., 97129 cognitive rehab, 92526 swallowing tx). You must provide at least 8 minutes of direct service to bill one unit. Sum your timed minutes, divide by 15, and if the remainder is 8 or more, add another unit. Note that untimed codes like 92507 (speech/language treatment) and evals are billed as 1 unit regardless of time spent.

What is PDPM case-mix group?

Under the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM), SLP patients are classified into 12 case-mix groups (SA through SL). It is determined by two tiers: the presence of acute neurologic conditions, SLP comorbidities, and cognitive impairment (Tier 1), combined with swallowing disorders and mechanically altered diets (Tier 2).

What is MLU in speech therapy?

Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) measures linguistic productivity. MLU in morphemes (MLU-m) divides total morphemes by total utterances, while MLU in words (MLU-w) uses words. MLU-m is the standard for assessing expressive language development against Brown's Stages.

SLP vs PT productivity targets

SLP productivity targets are typically 5–10% lower than PT or OT targets in the same setting. This is because speech therapy often involves longer, more complex evaluations, extensive standardized testing scoring, and detailed documentation that cannot be completed concurrently with patient care.
